Overview
Email alerts to users configured with external addresses (outside the local email domains) fail when Exchange Server (or another email server) is configured as the mail server for Alerting Options.
Environment
- All Supported Environments
Root Cause
By default, most email servers do not allow computers on the local domain to send them SMTP traffic that has to be relayed to an external domain destination.
NOTE: Email clients like Outlook can send email to external domains because they use a MAPI connection to the Exchange server instead of SMTP.

Resolution
- Configure the email server to "Allow relay" from the Network Server Monitor machine's IP Address to external domains.
- The method to achieve this depends on the email server version being used.
